Spring is upon us. It is a time for change and new beginnings.
There are many new things happening at Yadkin Riverkeeper. We are presenting our Summer Speaker Series, where guest speakers will lead virtual discussions on various topics that center around the Yadkin River. We are creating educational activities and experiences to connect our children to the natural world around them. And last month, YRK organized the first ever Great Yadkin River Bridge Earth Day Cleanup, which had 105 volunteers at 13 different locations, who collected 3,040 lbs. of trash!
Yadkin Riverkeeper has stayed true to its mission to protect and enhance the Yadkin Pee Dee River basin through education, advocacy, and action. But we couldn’t do it without your help. Please consider a donation to our Spring Appeal today to support our new initiatives.
With your support, YRK will be expanding our Swim Guide sampling to include swimming areas at Badin Lake and the Kerr Scott Reservoir, along with the four sites we sampled last year on High Rock Lake, the South Yadkin and the River. In addition to the expanded Swim Guide sampling, YRK will be sampling High Rock Lake for signs of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and continuing our nutrient sampling on a seasonal basis. We are developing an advocacy tool kit and training to make our supporters more effective advocates for the River, and expanding our work on environmental justice to ensure all communities have clean water and aren’t being negatively impacted by environmental pollution.
As was the case for most organizations, Yadkin Riverkeeper had to cut back on our events in the past year. This year, we are excited to expand our schedule and reconnect with our supporters. Our 2021 event schedule is as follows:
June 4: NC Trail Days River Paddle and Cleanup Ronda to Elkin
June 19: Falls Reservoir Paddle
July 24: Crater Park Elkin to Carolina Heritage Winery Paddle
August 25: Abbotts Creek- Highway 47 Bridge Paddle (Davidson County Creek Week)
August 28: Kayak Demo- Lake Corriher Park Kayak Demonstration (Rowan County Creek Week)
September 18: High Rock Lake Clean Sweep
September 25: Old 421 to Huntsville/Shallow Ford Paddle and Hike
October 9: Roaring River to Ronda Paddle
Your contribution to Yadkin Riverkeeper will ensure we can continue our work towards our goal of clean water for everyone, both now and in the future. We hope you can assist us in our endeavor. If you are able, please donate today.
Thank you.
