YADKIN RIVER PROTECTION FUND
Yadkin Riverkeeper will use the Yadkin River Protection Fund to conduct real time water sampling and monitoring to independently document and verify violations of federal and state clean water standards and other potential threats to water quality. Funds also will be used to support policy and regulatory analysis and develop advocacy and legal strategies to ensure compliance and enforcement with water quality permits and standards. Some current projects include:
Alcoa Badin Business Park stormwater and hazardous waste permit compliance and enforcement on Badin Lake.
Oversight of Duke Energy's coal ash removal activities at the Buck Power Station on the Yadkin River in Rowan Co.
Advocating the NC Environmental Management Commission adopt a chlorophyll- a standard for High Rock Lake.
Monitoring and assessment of potentially harmful algal blooms or "HABs" in the Yadkin Pee Dee Lakes.
Review of permits for large developments in sensitive areas (i,e, headwaters, floodplains, riparian buffers and isolated wetlands).
Calling for the development numerical nutrient management criteria and other water quality standards needed to project human health and wildlife.
